Combining tradition and country style, The Tilghman Island Chair Co.,
on remote Tilghman Island on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, is producing exceptional hand-decorated new and vintage furniture. Artists, Janice Pifer and Jane Bender have developed their own method of decoupage, combined with special paints and stains to produce charming furniture and accessory pieces for children and adults.
Each piece is a classic find, carefully refurbished and redesigned to become an heirloom of tomorrow. Pifer and Bender scour the countryside for perfect candidates for the collection. They define the personality of each piece, translating that personality into decoupage and paint. In their hands, a dilapidated child’s rocker with good bones and curving lines, for instance, might become a lovely black and white toile rocker with a refinished seat and a cozy black and white check pillow. Or a sturdy square child’s desk chair might be treated to a bandana print finish with a blackboard painted desk. Other pieces are designed from new solid wood furniture.
Adult furniture includes occasional tables and accent pieces.
Children's furniture includes rocking chairs, table and chair sets, youth chairs and more.
